Description: Billy Bob Sowell of Iron Horse Forge, earned his master smith stamp in 2009. He worked as a locomotive engineer for Norfolk Southern Railroad for 39 years and before that was a Poseidon missile tech on a nuclear submarine. Since childhood, knives were a fascination.
Billy Bob learned from some of the best in the industry. Mastersmith Rick Dunkerley taught him to make damascus and folders. Rick's influence is clearly visible in this elegant folder. Mastersmith Jim Batson taught him to make Bowies. Mastersmith Don Fogg taught him just about everything else … from heat treating to finishing. He even took Fogg’s sword class at Campbell Folk School and went to about every hammer-in that he could over the years, learning from countless presenters who helped him along the way. Billy Bob won the award for “Best Antique Bowie by an ABS Journeyman Smith” three years in a row – making him the only maker to have won three times.
The 3 inch clip point blade is CPM-154 stainless steel with a hand rubbed satin finish. This powdered metallurgical steel has a particularly small grain structure, making it take an extremely keen edge and hold it while remaining tough and chip resistant. The blade can be easily opened using the knurled right-handed thumbstud.
Handle scales are premium snakewood (Brosimum guianense). Snakewood is a tremendously dense wood with a unique figure that immediately captures attention. The scales meet in a complex curve with mokume bolsters forged by renowned ABS Bladesmithing Hall of Fame knifemaker Mastersmith Al Pendray. Regrettably, Al passed away in 2017. Pendray is best known for having rediscovered the secrets to creating Wootz. Heat colored and textured 15n20 liners surround a fileworked and heat colored 15n20 backbar. Screws throughout are heat colored and hand fileworked.
Excellent work throughout!
