Description: This Japanese-inspired tanto was made by knifemaker Ron Gaston. It has been in a private collection and has been meticulously cared for. It is in new condition and by all appearances, it could have been made yesterday.
The tanto blade is hand ground CPM-154 stainless steel with a meticulous hand rubbed satin finish. This powdered metallurgical steel has a particularly small grain structure, making it take an extremely keen edge and hold it while remaining tough and chip resistant. The blade is hollow ground with a swedge moving into an armor piercing tip. Ron's mark is on the left side of the blade.
Handle scales are exhibition grade Arizona desert ironwood burl set on a distal tapered full tang. Desert ironwood (Olneya tesota) is a rare wood that is only found in the valleys of the Sonoran Desert below 2,500 foot elevation. It is extremely dense and durable. In fact it is so dense, that if a piece is dropped in water it will sink! The scales are dovetailed to satin finished stainless steel bolsters.
To protect the knife during storage, a saya made from matching ironwood is included. The saya has a perfect friction fit.
Excellent work throughout!
