Description: Gil Hibben lives and works in La Grange, Kentucky. He began making knives part-time after his discharge from the Navy in 1956. He sold his first bowie knife for $45 and that sparked his long and famous career as a professional knife maker. While living in Seattle after his Navy discharge, Gil worked as a machinist for Boeing and learned a lot about metals and their properties. In 1964, while living in Salt Lake City, Utah, Gil started making knives full time. This was also the year Gil started making knives from the relatively new 440C steel. Although it is an industry standard now, Gil believes he was the first custom knife maker to use 440C. Hibben has been a full time custom knifemaker since 1957. Gil was inducted into the Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall of Fame in 1990.
This knife was handmade by Gil himself. The ricasso features his Louisville, Kentucky logo, which shows it was made sometime after 1988, but before 1992 when he moved to La Grange KY. According to Gil, he made very few of these and does not plan to make another one. This design became the mass produced model known as the Silver Shadow. While similar, there are some key differences from the production model such as handle shape, ricasso length, shaping of the fittings, and the mark. The knife is in brand new condition and by all appearances, Gil could have made it yesterday!.
The dagger ground blade features symmetrical hollow grinds, brought to a mirror polish. The blade is 440C stainless steel. Gil's signature is on the ricasso.
The twisted stainless steel wire wrapped handle is extremely comfortable and provides excellent grip. The stainless steel guard and pommel are mirror polished. This knife could easily become the center of any high end knife collection.
To keep the knife close at hand, a hand tooled black leather sheath is included.
A rare chance to own this exceptional work from a master of his craft!
