Description: Mitch Jenkins’ was fortunate to have famous knifemaker Steve Johnson as his Scoutmaster at an early age. Soon, Jenkins was sweeping out his shop and later cutting blanks and doing some grinding. Mitch made his first knife in his teens with Steve's help. He's also very lucky to be friends with John Young. Mitch is in the shop everyday trying to make the best possible handcrafted working knives after the traditions established by Bob Loveless and Steve Johnson. He believes in sole-authorship and does all his own heat treating and sheath making. This knife was kept in a private collection since it was made. It is in brand new condition and by all appearances, Mitch could have made it yesterday!
The New York Special was a hallmark of Loveless' knives. The Loveless NY Special was based on the larger Riverside Hideout model. The comfortable handle shape is known as 'The Lamb', after its designer, Thomas Lamb. It is a timeless utility style that is extremely comfortable to use.
The boot ground blade is RWL-34 stainless steel with a meticulous mirror polish. RWL-34 is a premium powder metallurgy cutlery steel manufactured by Damasteel in Söderfors, Sweden. Because it is made from rapidly solidified powders, the microstructure of the steel is much more uniform. This gives the steel higher strength and resistance to cracks and chips. Jenkins’ touchmark is on the left side of the blade.
Premium mammoth ivory scales are set on a distal tapered full tang. The ivory is well matched, incorporating cream tones with rare green tones. These colors move into the ivory from surrounding minerals while buried in the permafrost for thousands of years. The scales are nicely contoured to fill your hand and provide a comfortable grip. Red fiber liners will help the ivory adjust to humidity and temperature changes. A polished stainless steel bolster finishes the handle.
To keep the knife close at hand, a leather pocket sheath is included.
Excellent work throughout!
