Description: Doug Noren was welcomed as Mastersmith at the 2004 Blade Show. His work is exceptional, drawing heavily on the work of the late William Scagel. More so than nearly any other maker, William Scagel's knives have captured the imagination of American knife collectors, with the unique shape and appearance.
This hatchet is very true to Scagel's designs from the solid carbon steel head and neck to the crown stag handle. The front of the brass guard has been beveled and fits perfectly to the 5160 haft. The head has been differentially heat treated, assuring a keen, long lasting edge with extremely durability. Each of the cutting edges measures approx 2 1/4 inches. The total length from antler crown to the top of the head is 10 3/4 inches. The total length from cutting edge, to cutting edge is just shy of 3 3/4 inches. The handle is formed by stacking layers of brass with leather and fiber. A central section of fossil mammoth ivory brings in tremendous interest. The resulting hand is both dramatic and extremely comfortable. The fit and finish is exceptional.
