Description: This large saya rasp is designed to make adjustments for saya (wooden blade guards used for Japanese swords. The aggressive rasp is nicely shaped to easily re-shape the interior of the saya. The long handle makes it possible to reach all the way to the tip.
Before making adjustments to saya, it is important to be sure that the wood has acclimatized to your living conditions. A slightly tighter fit in low humidity conditions is a good idea. Differing levels of ambient humidity can cause wood to either swell or shrink. The fit can be loosened by working with a file such as this. Don't use sand paper - it can leave minute particles embedded in the wood, causing scratches to the blade.
Only remove minuscule amounts of wood, and be sure to continually re-check the fit of the blade. The goal is to create a tight enough fit to ensure your blade won't slide unassisted out of the saya, while removing just enough wood for the knife to enter the saya completely closing the gap between the mouth of the saya and the blade or habaki.
