Description: Mastersmith Burt Foster is well known for his performance hunting knives. And seeing this dramatic integral hunter, it is clear why. This knife was forged in 2007 and has been meticulously cared for. It is in new condition.
The drop point blade was forged from W2 carbon steel. A differential heat treatment was accomplished through a Japanese technique where clay is layered on the spine, forming a heat sink. The resulting hardening line, called a hamon, is extremely dramatic and the artistry of the pattern shows off Burt's skills at their best. A blade with a hard edge and softer back is not only beautiful, but was done over the years to give a simple steel the ability to cut very well but still have enough toughness in the soft spine to keep it from breaking.
By distal tapering the tang and blade, Burt has created a perfect balance in a knife that you'll really want to keep in your hand. Stabilized spalted maple scales are set on the full, distal tapered tang. They are perfectly fit to the integral guard. The handle has been carved for a very comfortable grip. Exceptional work throughout.
