Description: Knifemaker Hidetoshi Nakayama has been making knives since 1990. I was tremendously impressed when I first encountered his work back in 2004 and now, 6 years later, his considerable skill has developed and refined. I am very pleased to be able to offer his work again this year.
Nakayama-san has been a netsuke artist for over 15 years. Netsuke is a form of small sculpture which developed as an art form in Japan over a period of more than three hundred years, serving both functional and aesthetic purposes. Eventually this netsuke art - the original purpose of netsuke being a toggle used to stop a kimono cord from slipping - began to feature elaborate carving, lacquer work, and inlays of rare and exotic materials. These include ivory, wood, precious metals, shell, coral, and semiprecious stones. It's obvious how the attention necessary for carving fine figures in netsuke has transferred to making pens.
This unique Bolt Action Pen is formed from antiqued and textured stainless steel along with satin finished brass. The top is completed with a lanyard loop. The ball point retracts and locks both in open and closed positions using the bolt-action mechanism. The cartridge is a Caran d'Ache of Switzerland and is the Giant Cartridge (Goliath), medium tip in black. It can be easily changed by unscrewing the front of the pen.
Exceptional work throughout!
