Description: Perhaps most desired of Mastersmith Bill Burke's knives are his black sheep horn hunters. Black sheep horn is extremely rare. The horn on this handle combines blonde and black tones into a convoluted, dramatic grip.
This is the sort of knife that if you were stuck out in the woods or on a desert island and only had one tool, this would be it. It was pre-tested for edge flex and cutting ability before assembly. The heat treatment is a highly detailed process that was developed between Mastersmiths Ed Fowler and Bill Burke after years of trial and experimentation. This technique, involving low temperature forging, triple quenching and triple tempering creates some of the sharpest and most long lasting edges found anywhere. A differential heat treatment results in a blade with a soft, supportive spine and a keen, long lasting edge. Bill's mark is on the left side of the blade, with his M.S. mark on the right.
The blade was forged to shape from Bill's own damascus -- a complex pattern creating an inverse firestorm by forging an upset double twist. The pattern is extremely complex and shows Bill's mastery at the forge.
The handle combines black sheep horn with a brass guard. The natural convoluted sheep horn is combined with polished sections for an extremely comfortable handle. The butt is set with ancient walrus ivory. The guard protects your fingers from moving onto the blade's edge and brings the weight to the center of the knife. When wet, sheep horn does not become slippery, and it is amazingly durable. A spacer is created by taking two black sheep horn end cuts and aligning them outward, producing a very pleasing effect. The knife is accompanied by a sturdy, waxed leather pouch style sheath. An extremely comfortable handle. Excellent fit and finish throughout.
An amazing find!
