Description: Mastersmith Daniel Winkler is well known throughout the world for his primitive style knives. His work has an authenticity rarely found in other makers' work and a primitive power that is immediately captivating. With Daniel's success creating the Winkler II line of knives, it has become increasingly difficult to come by his handmade work. This is an exceptional example of one of his bowies. It has been in a single private collection and has been meticulously cared for.
The 5.7 inch blade was forged to shape from carbon steels into a bold, high layer count damascus. The flats are textured to resemble the patterns found on a worn out ferrier's rasp. In colonial America, rasps were frequently made into knives after they had lost their bite.
The handle is formed from a crown stag that Daniel split and set on a distal tapered full tang. The stag fits comfortably into the hand and the natural texture provides a secure grip. A damascus ferrule is surrounded by mild steel spacers. The knife is completed with a mild steel quillion guard.
The knife is accompanied by a cowboy style rawhide sheath by Karen Shook. The sheath incorporates leather fringe, trade beads, and horse hair. The throat is set with a damascus concho. Excellent fit and finish throughout.
