Description: Gary Kelley makes authentically styled Early American primitive edged tools for re-enactors, living history enthusiasts and hunters. He is a one-man shop, with thirty years experience in metalwork, casting, custom knife making, and crafting Native American and fur trade weaponry. He became a member of the Knifemakers Guild in 1974.
This Nessmuk styled axe was made in the spring of 2007. It has been in a single private collection since it was first made. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition.
The double sided head is forged from dendritic D2 semi-stainless steel, known for its toughness and edge retention. All lines are smoothed and flowing. Gary engraved his maker's mark ("KELLEY") along with "RC 54 / 3 of 6 / 4-12-07" on one side of the head. The reverse is engraved "D2" and "Nessmuk". This Nessmuk style axe was inspired by explorer George Washington Sears, who was born in 1821, lived with Nipmuc Indians and learned skills of wilderness living. He is best known for his writings under the pen name of "Nessmuk", which dated from 1880 - 1890. During this time, he developed the knife and axe styles which would later bear his name.
The handle is of hickory wood, which is very hard, stiff, dense and shock resistant. The combination of strength, toughness, hardness, and stiffness found in hickory wood is not found in any other commercial wood, making it a perfect choice for axes. The bottom half of the handle is carved with a myriad of tiny dots and banded grooves, offering a secure grip. The end of the shaft has a hole drilled and a tan cowhide lanyard has been attached. The piece has a very rustic feel and look to it. A handy and durable, tough small axe suitable for heavy jobs, yet also appropriate for most any collection.
