Description: Gary Kelley makes authentically styled Early American primitive edged tools for re-enactors, living history enthusiasts and hunters. He is a one-man shop, with thirty years experience in metalwork, casting, custom knife making, and crafting Native American and fur trade weaponry. He became a member of the Knifemakers Guild in 1974.
This Woodsman's Hatchet was made in 2007. It has been in a single private collection since it was first made. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition.
The head is forged from dendritic D2 semi-stainless steel, known for its toughness and edge retention. All lines are smoothed and flowing. One side is a rounded hammer head, and the other a razor sharp, rounded arc of a blade.
The handle is of hickory wood, which is very hard, stiff, dense and shock resistant. The combination of strength, toughness, hardness, and stiffness found in hickory wood is not found in any other commercial wood, making it a perfect choice for axes. The bottom of the handle is wrapped with a fine black and OD green cord soaked in resin, offering a secure grip. The piece has a very rustic feel and look to it. A handy and durable, tough small axe suitable for heavy jobs.
