Description: Dr Fred Carter was inspired to make knives after seeing a handmade D’Alton Holder hunter in a local knife shop. He soon started making hunting knives and the rest is history. A Knifemakers Guild member since 1976, he has won numerous awards. Fred is still active in his shop in Texas, but has a huge backlog and his knives are very sought after. This knife has been in a private collection. It has been meticulously cared for and by all appearances could have been made yesterday. It has not been used to cut and has not be sharpened since it was made.
This hunter sports a handle of ram's horn. Warm blond tones and subtle striations highlight the beauty of this natural material. The handle is carved to swell at the palm, move into a slimmer waist and swell again at the end. A distal tapered tang provides perfect balance and durability. Red fiber spacers are sandwiched between the scales and the tang, assisting the handle to adjust to temperature and humidity changes. Five pins secure the scales.
The nickel silver bolsters were engraved by Fred in Western Scroll style. His engraving is deeply carved and highly detailed, showing tremendous skill.
The blade is hand rubbed, satin finished 440C stainless steel. It is flat ground for strength.
Exceptional work throughout!
