Description: Daniel Winkler became a full time bladesmith in 1988. His inspiration continues to come from frontier America - a time when the equipment a person carried meant sustenance and survival. He strives to be innovative, while maintaining a recognizable style. His goal is to make tools of uncompromising quality that will last a lifetime and survive as heirlooms for future generations. Winkler had the honor of producing knives and axes for use by principal actors in the epic motion picture Last of the Mohicans
Orvis was founded by Charles F. Orvis in Manchester, VT in 1856. They are America’s oldest mail order outfitter and longest continually-operating fly fishing business. They have become an international, multi-channel retailer. They also have been fortunate enough to have partnered with Daniel Winkler over the years.
This is Orvis' first limited edition with Daniel. Only 30 pieces were made. No two are exactly alike, and the design will never be made again. This is the first (#1) of the 30 knives that were made. This folder has been in a private collection since it was first made by Daniel in 2000. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition. It has not been used to cut.
Orvis chose a friction folder for their first limited edition. The blade was forged to shape from 384 layer damascus combining 15N20 and 1084 carbon steels. The handle is crafted from stag, hand selected and matched personally by Daniel. Bolsters are antiqued steel. Decorative filework adorns the spine, and a forged curl acts as the blade stop. The folder itself is somewhat of a rarity in the Winkler repertoire.
The sheath is handmade by Karen Shook. It is hand cut and then hand-stitched. The rawhide wrap is sewn around an inner pocket of leather. Decorative thongs are made from deer hide. The sheath itself is a work of art.
This is a rare opportunity to procure an item long discontinued, and even then was extremely limited.
