Description: Daniel Winkler became a full time bladesmith in 1988. His inspiration continues to come from frontier America - a time when the equipment a person carried meant sustenance and survival. He strives to be innovative, while maintaining a recognizable style. His goal is to make tools of uncompromising quality that will last a lifetime and survive as heirlooms for future generations. Winkler had the honor of producing knives and axes for use by principal actors in the epic motion picture Last of the Mohicans
Orvis was founded by Charles F. Orvis in Manchester, VT in 1856. They are America’s oldest mail order outfitter and longest continually-operating fly fishing business. They have become an international, multi-channel retailer. They also have been fortunate enough to have partnered with Daniel Winkler over the years.
This is Orvis' fifth limited edition with Daniel. Only 30 sets were made. No two are exactly alike, and the design will never be made again. This is the first (#1) of the 30 sets that were made. This set has been in a private collection since it was made by Daniel in 2004. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition. It has not been used to cut.
The set includes a fixed blade, a friction folder, sheaths, and presentation stand. The blades were forged to shape from 384 layer damascus combining 1084 and 15N20 carbon steels. The handles are crafted of shed American elk antler from Montana, hand selected and matched personally by Daniel. Each bolster is antiqued steel. Decorative filework adorns the spine of each knife, and a forged curl acts as the blade stop on the folder. The folder's overall length is 5-3/4 inches, with a blade length of 2-1/3 inches. The fixed blade is 7-1/4 inches overall with a blade length of 3.6 inches.
Both sheaths were handmade by Karen Shook. The decorations include glass trade beads, tin cones, and horse hair. The sheaths themselves are works of art.
This pair comes with a custom stand crafted by Daniel from fallen tree limbs, then sealed with beeswax and linseed oil. The supports are made of shed deer antler.
This is a rare opportunity to procure a set long discontinued, and even then was extremely limited.
