Description: Daniel Winkler and Karen Shook work together to create knives that have a timeless beauty that will quickly become family heirlooms. Their name is well known in re-enactment circles throughout the world and movie buffs may recognize their work in films such as Last of the Mohicans. Their knives have an authenticity rarely found in other maker's work.
Finding Daniel and Karen's knives has become increasingly difficult. This Traditional Belt Knife was made in 1997 and has been meticulously cared for. This knife was the first of three "Signature Sets" that were made by Daniel and Karen over the years. Each of the sets were limited editions of 8 to 10 pieces. This knife was used in all of their promotional materials for a year.
This knife has a tremendous sense of presence. The carbon steel blade was forged to shape. A distal taper to both blade and tang provides a perfect balance. Daniel convex ground the edge, leaving dramatic forge marks in the flats. It feels to be something that our grandfathers would have carried.
The handle is formed from rustic filed ebony wood set on the distal tapered full tang. Front and rear bolsters along with a central frame were formed by pouring pewter directly in place. This is a technique that was frequently used in colonial America. The handle is extremely comfortable in the hand.
The knife is accompanied by a sheath by Karen Shook. The frontier style sheath is formed from rawhide and hand painted by Karen. Very few sheaths were painted over the years by Karen due to the immense difficulty of the process. Leather fringe is decorated with antique glass trade beads, tin cones, and horse hair.
This is an exceptionally rare find from Daniel and Karen -- in fact, it was rare to find knives of this stature by them even when their work was more generally available.
