Description: Mastersmith Daniel Winkler and Karen Shook work together to create knives that have a timeless beauty that will quickly become family heirlooms. Their name is well known in re-enactment circles throughout the world and movie buffs may recognize their work in films such as Last of the Mohicans. Their knives have an authenticity rarely found in other maker's work.
Finding Daniel and Karen's knives has become increasingly difficult. This Medicine Wheel Belt Knife was made in 1999 and has been meticulously cared for. This knife was the second of three "Signature Sets" that were made by Daniel and Karen over the years. Each of the sets were limited editions of 8 to 10 pieces. This knife was used in all of their promotional materials for that year. This belt knife is the sort of work that has made Daniel Winkler and Karen Shook household names in re-enactment circles throughout the world.
The blade was forged to shape from Daniel's own 384 layer damascus. The flats are forge finished to resemble a ferriers rasp. In colonial America, when nothing was wasted, worn out ferrier's rasps were frequently turned into knives.
The spine was hand fileworked for a secure thumb grip. The crown stag handle is exceptionally comfortable. A rawhide wrap provides grip and visual interest. A damascus ferrule brings weight toward the front of the knife and brings in visual interest. It is surrounded by sinew. The crown is finished off with a damascus pommel, textured on the sides to match the texture of the crown.
The knife is accompanied by a rawhide sheath by Karen Shook. The sheath is completed with leather fringe, antique glass trade beads, and tin cones and horse hair. The sheath is completed with a porcupine quill medicine wheel, a hallmark of Daniel and Karen's work.
Excellent fit and finish throughout. A very rare find!
