Description: Johann van Deventer, better known as JD, aims to produce unique knives of the highest degree of craftsmanship. He took up knife making in 2005 and became a member of the Knifemaker’s Guild of Southern Africa by 2007. He works in a one man shop and even builds most of his machines himself! He is clearly a maker to keep an eye on.
This EDC B flipper is a bulbous tactical folder with exceptional action. The blade is perfectly centered and silky smooth -- easily opened with one hand using the discreet and ambidextrous flipper toggle. The blade uses the IKBS (Ikoma Korth Bearing System) pivot system. This mechanism, which was originally designed to fit balisong knives, uses ball bearings to create smooth action with no blade play.
The blade is formed from N690 stainless steel, a super-steel created by Bohler in Austria. It takes an incredibly sharp edge and holds on to it. Increased toughness gives it better resistance to edge chipping. The blade is satin finished in the grinds and mirror polished on the flats. The nightmare grind provides a thin hollow ground section for detail slicing and a convex ground section for strength and durability.
The scales are stacked layers of alternating red G10 and carbon fiber that meet nicely with the anodized zirconium bolsters. Zirconium is a new material to the knifemaking world. It is a transitional metal that is primarily mined in South Africa and Australia. Zirconium is highly resistant to corrosion. The titanium liners are fileworked and anodized gold. The backbar is differentially polished and anodized blue. The bulbous handle is extremely comfortable and gives a particularly comfortable grip. The pocket clip is textured and anodized to match the backbar. It is mounted for tip-up, deep pocket carry.
