Description: Knifemaker Hidetoshi Nakayama has been making knives since 1990. I was tremendously impressed when I first encountered his work back in 2004 and his skills have continued to grow and develop. I am very pleased to continue to offer his work.
Nakayama-san has been a netsuke artist for over 25 years. Netsuke is a unique form of small sculpture which developed as an art form in Japan over a period of more than three hundred years, serving both functional and aesthetic purposes. Over time netsuke, which started as a toggle used to stop the kimono cord from slipping, began to feature elaborate carving, lacquer work, and inlays of rare and exotic materials including ivory, wood, precious metals, shell, coral, and semiprecious stones. Clearly the attention necessary for carving fine figures in netsuke has transferred to making pens.
This unique Bolt Action Pen is formed from polished, textured, and heat colored stainless steel. The top is completed with a lanyard loop. Nakayama-san's handmade pens are like an item from a bygone era -- each one is truly unique. The ball point retracts and locks both in open and closed positions using the bolt action mechanism. This tri-tone pen features hand brushed flats, orange peel heat colored rounds, and hand polished accents. On top of the action barrel, visible only when the pen is extending, sits a hidden sterling silver hand carved skull.
The cartridge is a Caran d'Ache of Switzerland and is the Giant Cartridge (Goliath), Medium tip in black. It can be easily changed by unscrewing the front of the pen.
Incredible attention to detail and craftsmanship doesn’t do justice to describe Hidetoshi's work!
