Description: 2016 marks the 40th anniversary of Bob's knifemaking. Throughout the year, he will be marking his 40 favorite knives of the year with the "Lay 40" mark to celebrate the anniversary. This is one such knife.
Bob Lay's Bowie knives are very hard to come by. He only makes 2-3 per year. When he does put his skill toward creating a Bowie, the results are exceptional, showing off designs that are well thought out and showing an amazing degree of craftsmanship.
The box elder burl handle has a dramatic, swirling grain pattern. A very rare muskox horn spacer adds excellent contrast. Muskox (Ovibos moschatus) is an Arctic mammal of the family Bovidae. Muskoxen primarily live in Arctic North America and Greenland, with small populations in Sweden, Siberia and Norway. The world population is estimated at between 80,000 and 125,000. Muskox boss is among the rarest handle materials used by knifemakers today. Black fiber spacers assist the handle to adjust to temperature and humidity changes. The stainless steel guard and butt cap create a perfect balance in the hand.
By mirror polishing the flats of the blade and satin finishing the grinds, Bob creates a knife with grind lines that are very dramatic. The blade is CPM154. This powdered metallurgical steel has a smaller grain structure allowing the blade to be keener and hold the edge longer. The blade has been tempered to 58 Rc for optimal edge retention.
Accompanied by certificate from the maker and a cordura storage pouch.
