Description: Fred Ott's work is exceptional -- showing off his tremendous sense of design and skill in implementation. This Nordic influenced hunter would perform exceptionally well out in the field, yet it would be at home in even the most refined collection.
The damascus blade was hand forged from 1095 and 15N20 carbon steels for a keen, long lasting edge. A distal taper provide a perfect balance. Three separate bars of damascus were forged and then combined to create intricate blade.
The handle is formed from presentation grade thuya burl (Tetraclinis articulata). The medium brown wood has beautiful grouped eyes and a swirling figure. The front 'bolster' is formed from Steller's sea cow bone. Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas) is an extinct, large sirenian mammal formerly found near the Asiatic coast of the Bering Sea. It was discovered in the Commander Islands in 1741 by the German naturalist Georg Steller, who was traveling with the explorer Vitus Bering. Through an unfortunate combination of being slow, large, and good tasting, by 1768, less than 30 years after it had been discovered, Steller's sea cow was extinct. The contoured handle ensures a firm, comfortable grip.
The knife is accompanied by a Nordic-inspired sheath. The carved walnut sheath is fit with a hand tooled leather upper. This style of sheath was developed because it easily slips out of the way when sitting (or riding horseback), rather than poking into your ribs, as so often happens with a American style sheath.
An exceptional addition to any collection and perfect for use out in the field.
