Description: Mastersmith Jerry Lairson creates some of the most dramatic knives that can be found anywhere. His has a tremendous attention to detail and focuses on balance such that you won't want to put his knives down. This exceptional knife was inspired to by WWII Marine Corps Ka-Bar Combat Knife. The Ka-Bar has an almost cult-like following in the military -- with stories of soldiers and Marines taking out enemies in brutal close-quarters combat. Unlike the knives used in the trenches of World War I, this new blade was meant to be an all-purpose tool. Troops needed something durable that could do the job of a last-ditch weapon -- yet it would also do well as a can-opener or pry-bar. The Iwa Jima Combat Knife was kept in a private collection since it was made by Lairson in January of 2002. It has been in a private collection and has been meticulously cared for. It has never been used and by all appearances, it could have been made yesterday.
Jerry's control over damascus is particularly exemplary. Here, Jerry forged the blade from 1084 and 5160 carbon steels. Showing particularly good control, the bold ladder at the top of the blade moves into a sharkstooth pattern at the edge. An appleseed grind ensures a very strong edge that will hold up under heavy use. By forging the blade to shape, Jerry is able to make the pattern follow the blade edge. The result is exceptional.
The handle is formed from stabilized giraffe bone. Both the guard and pommel are formed from nickel silver with thin copper spacers for accent. The giraffe bone incorporates caramel, chocolate, and burnt cream tones. Like the original combat knife, Lairson's handle is fluted for an exceptional grip.
The Iwo Jima Combat Knife is accompanied by a hand stitched leather sheath.
Tremendous fit and finish throughout.
