Josh is the youngest person to become a Master Bladesmith in the American Bladesmith Society. His journey toward this rank began in 1993 when, at age 12, he joined the ABS. He earned his Journeyman rating in 1996 and waited another four years before attaining Mastersmith.

His interest in knives was kindled at age 11 by his little league baseball coach, ABS Mastersmith Rick Dunkerly. His parents gave him a Rick Dunkerly knife for Christmas and Josh visited Rick's shop soon afterward. Josh still has the first knife he produced under Rick's watchful eye.

By the time he attended his first show in Eugene, Oregon, which fell on his fourteenth birthday, Josh was working in his own shop. All his equipment was purchased with money he made mowing lawns. His favorite blademaking materials are 52100 carbon steel and Damascus steel forged from 15N20 and 1084 carbon steels.

Between knifemaking and attending school (high school and college), Josh also found time to hunt with both bow and gun.

Josh says:

  • "I have a strong commitment to sole authorship; I do my own work. This way, I know everything that went into the knife. By using many different natural materials I'm able to create knives where each and every knife is an individual. I make everything from simple hunting knifes to fancy art knives."
